Alternate Aerodrome
An alternate aerodrome is an aerodrome to which an aircraft may proceed when it becomes impossible or inadvisable to proceed to or land at the intended destination. It must be operational, meet aircraft performance requirements, and have the necessary services available at the expected time of use.
Key Points
- •An alternate aerodrome must be nominated if the destination forecast indicates weather below alternate minima, such as low visibility, low cloud ceilings, or high crosswinds.
- •For VFR by night, an alternate within one hour's flight time must be nominated unless specific radio navigation or GNSS conditions are met.
- •Holding fuel can sometimes be carried instead of planning an alternate aerodrome for INTER or TEMPO weather conditions.
Exam Relevance
Alternate planning criteria are core concepts in the PPL exam, ensuring pilots have safe backup landing options when weather or lighting conditions require it.
