Performancetake-off performance

Balanced Field Length

Balanced field length is a condition where the Take-off Distance Required (TODR) to clear a specified obstacle following an engine failure at decision speed (V1) is exactly equal to the Accelerate-Stop Distance Required (ASDR). It is used to optimise take-off weight for a given runway length, ensuring neither the go nor the stop case is more limiting than the other.

Key Points

  • •Balanced field length is used to maximise take-off weight on shorter runways.
  • •It involves balancing critical speeds including V1, VR, and V2.
  • •When the field is balanced, the required runway length is minimised to satisfy both the continued take-off and the rejected take-off requirements simultaneously.
