Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT)
An Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT) is a radio transmitter device designed to broadcast a distress signal on 121.5 MHz and 406 MHz in the event of an aircraft accident. ELTs can be automatic (activating on impact) or survival (portable) types, assisting search and rescue services in locating downed aircraft.
Key Points
- •An ELT must be registered with the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA).
- •The ELT transmits simultaneously on 121.5 MHz and 406 MHz.
- •A survival ELT must be carried on single-engine aircraft flying over water beyond gliding distance to a suitable forced landing area.
Exam Relevance
Questions often cover the carriage requirements for ELTs, particularly for flights over water or remote areas, which is essential for passenger and crew safety.
