Minimum Equipment List

A Minimum Equipment List (MEL) is an approved document, specific to an aircraft type and operator, that lists instruments and equipment that may be inoperative under defined conditions while still permitting legal flight operations. It is developed from a Master Minimum Equipment List (MMEL) and approved by CASA, and requires that inoperative items be placarded with appropriate maintenance release entries made. For most light general aviation aircraft, permissible unserviceabilities (PUS) listed in the aircraft's maintenance release serve a similar function.

Key Points

  • •An MEL must be carried on the flight if it is applicable to the aircraft.
  • •The MEL provides an alternative to permissible unserviceabilities (PUS) listed in the maintenance release.
  • •Any inoperative accessible equipment listed in the MEL must be placarded accordingly.

Exam Relevance

Pilots must understand how to apply the MEL and placard inoperative equipment before certifying an aircraft for flight.
