Engineslubrication systems

Oil Cooler

The oil cooler is a component of the engine's wet sump lubrication system that dissipates excess heat from the engine oil before it is recirculated through the engine. It is monitored indirectly via the oil temperature gauge, and a blocked oil cooler can cause high oil temperatures. Importantly, a combination of low oil pressure and high oil temperature is most likely caused by low oil quantity, not a blocked cooler.

Key Points

  • •Essential for preventing thermal breakdown of engine oil during normal operations.
  • •Monitored indirectly via the oil temperature gauge in the cockpit.
  • •Fitted with bypass valves to regulate oil flow based on temperature and pressure.
  • •A blocked oil cooler typically causes high oil temperature, whereas low oil pressure combined with high oil temperature most likely indicates low oil quantity.

Exam Relevance

Important for interpreting abnormal engine instrument indications and understanding the relationship between oil temperature, oil pressure, and oil quantity.
