Terminal Area Forecast (TAF)

A Terminal Area Forecast (TAF) is a statement of meteorological conditions expected for a specified period within a 5 NM radius of the aerodrome reference point. It includes prevailing visibility, wind speed and direction, cloud ceiling, and significant weather phenomena.

Key Points

  • •TAF stands for Terminal Aerodrome Forecast (not Terminal Area Forecast).
  • •Validity periods are 18, 24, or 30 hours depending on aerodrome type.
  • •Change groups include TEMPO (temporary, <60 min) and INTER (intermittent, <30 min).
  • •Cloud heights in TAFs are given in height above aerodrome level (AAL).

Exam Relevance

TAF interpretation is a staple of the RPL/PPL exams for determining if an alternate aerodrome is required.
