Time of Useful Consciousness

Time of Useful Consciousness (TUC), also known as effective performance time, is the approximate duration a pilot can function effectively without supplemental oxygen at a given altitude. TUC decreases significantly with increasing altitude, dropping rapidly above 20,000 ft. Prompt recognition of hypoxia symptoms is critical, as impairment can develop faster than expected.

Key Points

  • •TUC is the time from the loss of oxygen supply until a person can no longer perform useful actions.
  • •TUC decreases rapidly with altitude — at 25,000 ft, TUC is approximately 3–5 minutes.
  • •Symptoms of hypoxia can develop much faster at higher altitudes, including above 14,000 ft.
  • •Physical activity significantly reduces TUC by increasing the body's oxygen demand.
  • •Smoking and alcohol consumption reduce TUC at any altitude.

Exam Relevance

Essential for understanding the dangers of hypoxia and the urgent need for supplemental oxygen or descent.
