Common Traffic Advisory Frequency (CTAF)

A Common Traffic Advisory Frequency (CTAF) is a designated radio frequency on which pilots make positional broadcasts when operating in the vicinity of a non-controlled aerodrome. It is used to maintain situational awareness and support traffic de-confliction among airspace users. Mandatory radio carriage and use is required at designated, certified, or military aerodromes.

Key Points

  • •Used for positional broadcasts at non-controlled aerodromes.
  • •Pilots should monitor the CTAF to build and maintain a mental picture of local traffic.
  • •Mandatory radio carriage and use is required at designated, certified, or military aerodromes.

Exam Relevance

Using the correct frequency and making the appropriate mandatory broadcasts is a critical safety requirement for VFR flying at non-controlled aerodromes.
