AerodynamicsTaxi, Take-off and Landing
Ground Effect
Ground effect is an aerodynamic phenomenon that occurs when an aircraft operates very close to the ground, resulting in an effective increase in lift and a decrease in induced drag. On approach, ground effect can prolong the float and cause the aircraft to balloon.
Key Points
- •Ground effect increases effective lift and decreases induced drag when the aircraft is operating close to the surface.
- •On approach, ground effect can cause an aeroplane to balloon if airspeed is too high.
- •During take-off, ground effect can allow an aircraft to become airborne below a safe flying speed.
Exam Relevance
Explains float during landing and premature lift-off tendencies, which are critical safety factors during the take-off and landing phases.
