AerodynamicsDrag
Induced Drag
Induced drag is a type of aerodynamic drag that is a direct by-product of an aerofoil generating lift. Unlike parasite drag, induced drag is highest at low airspeeds and high angles of attack, and gradually decreases as airspeed increases.
Key Points
- •Induced drag is a lift-dependent drag — it is caused directly by the generation of lift.
- •Induced drag is greatest at low airspeeds, where a high angle of attack is required to maintain lift.
- •Total aerodynamic drag is at its minimum at the airspeed where induced drag and parasite drag are exactly equal.
Exam Relevance
Understanding induced drag is crucial for CASA exams as it directly relates to aircraft efficiency, the calculation of best glide speeds, and identifying the point of minimum total drag.
