Maximum Take-off Weight (MTOW)

Maximum Take-off Weight (MTOW) is the maximum weight at which an aircraft is permitted to take off, as specified in its certificate of airworthiness. For type-certified aircraft, this figure may also appear in the Aircraft Flight Manual (AFM); however, if the certificate of airworthiness specifies a different weight to the manufacturer's document, the certificate of airworthiness weight applies. Exceeding MTOW invalidates the aircraft's airworthiness and insurance.

Key Points

  • •MTOW is defined as the maximum take-off weight specified in the certificate of airworthiness.
  • •The certificate of airworthiness weight takes precedence if it differs from the manufacturer's document.
  • •Exceeding MTOW invalidates the aircraft's airworthiness and insurance.
  • •Performance calculations must be based on the actual planned take-off weight, not simply MTOW.

Exam Relevance

Pilots must ensure their calculated take-off weight never exceeds the MTOW to ensure structural integrity and adequate take-off performance.
