Mercy Flight
A mercy flight is a flight undertaken in a severe emergency to save a person's life or alleviate serious suffering when no other transport is available. A pilot in command (PIC) may declare a mercy flight, which may justify deviation from standard operating rules, provided strict notification conditions are met.
Key Points
- •Only permitted when life is in immediate danger and no alternative transport exists.
- •Allows the pilot to deviate from certain CASR provisions if absolutely necessary.
- •Must be explicitly declared to Air Traffic Services and reported afterwards.
Exam Relevance
Exam candidates must know the specific legal conditions under which a mercy flight can be declared and the associated regulatory exemptions and reporting requirements.
