Right-of-Way Rules
Right-of-way rules are a set of standard regulations determining which aircraft must give way to another when their flight paths converge. The fundamental rule is that an aircraft must give way to another aircraft on its right, and an aircraft being overtaken has the right of way.
Key Points
- •Aircraft converging head-on must both alter course to the right to avoid collision.
- •The lower aircraft established on final approach has the right of way over other aircraft.
- •Powered aircraft must give way to unpowered aircraft such as gliders and balloons.
Exam Relevance
Directly tested in air law to ensure students can safely avoid collisions in the air and on the manoeuvring area.
