Flight RulesSearch and Rescue
SARWATCH
SARWATCH is a generic term covering Search and Rescue Watch alerting for aircraft. It can be based on full position reporting procedures, scheduled reporting times (SKEDS), or a nominated SARTIME. If a SARWATCH is not cancelled by the nominated time, search and rescue procedures are initiated.
Key Points
- •SARWATCH is the state of readiness maintained by ATS after a SARTIME is lodged.
- •For SARTIME flights, pilots of single VHF radio-equipped aircraft must cancel their SARTIME before changing to CTAF, or after landing.
- •Cancel SARTIME by contacting the ATS unit providing the SARWATCH.
- •If not cancelled by the nominated time, search and rescue procedures are initiated.
Exam Relevance
Understanding how SARWATCH protects pilots is a core flight planning and safety competency for the PPL exam.
