AerodynamicsLift and Drag
Form Drag
Form drag is a type of parasite drag caused by the physical shape and frontal area of an aircraft pushing through the air. Bulky or unstreamlined shapes create a larger pressure differential between the front and rear of the object, which significantly increases this drag.
Key Points
- •Form drag is a primary component of parasite (zero-lift) drag.
- •It depends on the size, shape, and aerodynamic streamlining of the aircraft structure.
- •Form drag increases rapidly as indicated airspeed increases.
Exam Relevance
Pilots must understand the components of total drag and how airspeed affects them, particularly recognizing that form drag increases with the square of the airspeed.
