AerodynamicsLift and Drag

Interference Drag

Interference drag is a type of parasite drag generated by the collision and mixing of varied airflows at the intersection of different aircraft components, such as where the wing root meets the fuselage. Aerodynamic fairings and fillets are often used to smooth these junctions and minimise the turbulent mixing.

Key Points

  • •Interference drag is caused by the mixing of airflows at perpendicular or sharp structural junctions.
  • •It is classified as a form of parasite drag, meaning it increases at higher airspeeds.
  • •It is minimised through the use of streamlined fairings and fillets.

Exam Relevance

Important for distinguishing between the different types of drag that affect a subsonic aircraft in flight and understanding how airframe design mitigates them.
