Transition Level
The transition level is the lowest available flight level above the transition altitude. In the Australian Flight Information Region, it is normally FL110 when the area QNH is 1013.2 hPa or higher, but adjusts upward when the area QNH drops below 1013.2 hPa.
Key Points
- •Normally set at FL110 in Australia when the area QNH is 1013.2 hPa or higher.
- •Adjusts upward when area QNH falls below 1013.2 hPa, to maintain a minimum 1,000 ft buffer above the transition altitude.
- •Marks the base of the flight levels where the standard pressure setting of 1013.2 hPa is used by all aircraft.
Exam Relevance
Understanding how barometric pressure affects the lowest usable flight level is critical for terrain clearance and vertical separation calculations.
