Flight Rulesarrivals

Visual Approach

A visual approach is an approach to an aerodrome conducted with visual reference to terrain and the aerodrome environment. Visual approaches may be conducted by both VFR and IFR flights. For VFR flights, specific tracking requirements apply during a visual approach, including requirements for night operations.

Key Points

 • •By day, the pilot must maintain track until within 5 NM of the aerodrome.
 • •By night, the pilot must maintain track until within 3 NM and the aerodrome is in sight.
 • •Pilots must not descend below the lowest permissible altitude for VFR flight during the approach.

Exam Relevance

Pilots need to know the tracking and minimum altitude requirements when cleared for a visual approach in controlled airspace.
