Wake Turbulence
Wake turbulence is turbulence generated by the passage of an aircraft in flight, primarily caused by wingtip vortices or helicopter downwash. It can be extremely hazardous to smaller aircraft operating closely behind or below large transport aircraft.
Key Points
- •Produced by all aircraft, with large jets producing the most severe wake turbulence.
- •May not dissipate for several minutes in calm conditions.
- •Helicopters in forward flight and while hovering also produce hazardous downwash and vortices.
Exam Relevance
Understanding wake turbulence separation and avoidance strategies is critical for safe take-off and landing operations.
